About the Artist
Ale Calatayud
When I paint, I get transported into a deep meditation and not much else matters. I fall right inside the canvas as if I am entering a closed white room with no doors nor windows. I find that I hardly ever want to get out if it – it’s usually the lack of proper light that kicks me out.
I wanted to paint as far back as I can remember but I did not get the opportunity to study art in my younger years. After a successful career in technology and influenced by a life changing experience walking the full 800 km of the Camino de Santiago, I decided to move to Florence, Italy and finally pursue my life passion.
I am mostly interested in portraying positive human emotions and beauty. I want to capture the part of life that we all seek to experience, the reasons for which we love to be alive.
I studied the Three-year Diploma Program at the Angel Academy of Art, a classical realism, atelier style school, teaching the drawing and painting methodology of the Old Masters. I became a professional painter and set up my painting studio and gallery in Florence in November of 2025.
My training at the Angel Academy of Art taught me to see and to measure, but my subject comes from my own irruption: a Mexican woman who began to paint at 50, in a classical atelier in Florence. My current trilogy "The Irruption" explores precisely that - what happens when one world suddenly appears inside another
